Y Chromosome DNA

The Y chromosome is present only in males and is passed down nearly unchanged from father to son. Because of its unique inheritance pattern, Y chromosome DNA is a rich source of information about a person’s direct paternal ancestors (father, father’s father, etc.) going back many generations.

It is important to note that even though a woman does not have a Y chromosome, she can still learn about her paternal lineage through analysis of the Y chromosome of a living relative such as her father, uncle or brother.
