"I can't think of anything that matters more than reminding people everywhere that in a very real sense, we are all brothers and sisters." Levoy

- James LeVoy Sorenson Founder, SMGF

In 1999, philanthropist and world renowned inventor James LeVoy Sorenson, approached BYU professor Dr. Scott Woodward about his idea for mapping the world's DNA to show just how close the world is related. They set the goal to have the capabilities to show any two people in the world how they are related.

In the years that followed, Mr. Sorenson's dream has become a reality. The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) evolved to hold the world's foremost collection of DNA and corresponding genealogical information. SMGF is a non-profit organization that has collected more than 100,000 DNA samples, together with four-generation pedigree charts, from volunteers in more than 150 countries around the world. As a non-profit research institution, SMGF was unable to provide the tools necessary for the public to access and understand their valuable results.

The vision for GeneTree was conceived in 2006 when the principals at the Sorenson companies wanted to provide a way for the public to utilize the value of the SMGF DNA databases. The resulting innovative GeneTree tools and information have helped fuel the efforts and imaginations of countless people who are seeking greater knowledge about their genetic and cultural origins. The GeneTree beta site was formally launched October 23, 2007.

GeneTree and SMGF have come together in an effort to apply the tools and information contained within GeneTree to the tremendous scientific power of the SMGF database. Together, GeneTree and SMGF can deliver unprecedented possibilities to individuals seeking out their own heritage.
